  • Is named after Mount Kenya or 'Kirinyaga', the mountain of whiteness
  • Area: Kenya covers 580,367 sq km. 13,600km of which is lakes
  • Borders with: Uganda, Tanzania, Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia
  • Population: 30 million, 46% of which is aged under 15 with a population growth rate of 3.3%. About 99 per cent of Kenya's population is made up of indigenous Africans. Other population groups, in order of size, are Asian Indians, Europeans and Arabs.
  • Capital: Nairobi
  • Official Languages: English & Kiswahili
  • Time: GMT/UTC +3 all year round with an almost constant 12 hours of daylight. Sun-up and sun-down at around 6.30 and 18.45 daily.

  • Climate: The coast is always hot with 27-31 degrees centigrade whilst the average temperature in Nairobi is 21-26 degrees centigrade.
  • Religion:hotels in Basel Christianity is the dominant religion. There is also a large Muslim community.
  • Education: Five public universities and several private universities, colleges and other institutions of higher learning.
  • Currency: The Kenya Shilling (Ksh): 1US$ - Ksh78
  • Media: Four daily English newspapers, one daily Kiswahili newspaper, seven local television stations and 19 local and two foreign radio stations.
  • Historical sites: Kenya has more than 400 historical sites ranging from prehistoric fossils and petrified forests to 14th century slave trading settlements, Islamic ruins and 16th century Portuguese forts.
  • Tourism: Major contributor to the Kenyan economy after horticulture, providing more than 500,000 direct and indirect jobs.
  • Rivers and lakes: The Athi and the Tana are Kenya's chief rivers, flowing from the highlands to the Indian Ocean. Lake Turkana covers 6,405 square kilometres in the far north while Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake at 69,484 sq km lies at the western end of Kenya.
  • Agriculture: Divided between cash and subsistence crops including maize, beans and cassava. Employs 80% of population and contributes 25% to GDP.
  • Manufacturing: discount hotels in BrusselsChief products include cement, chemicals, household utensils, light machinery, motor vehicles, paper and paper products, and textiles. Food processing is a major industry and a refinery at Mombasa processes oil from other countries.
  • Mining: Centres around soda, fluorite, salt, and gemstones.
  • Exports: Kenya is the largest grower and exporter of of cut roses in the world. Other major exports include coffee, tea, flowers, petroleum products, cement, meat, pineapples, and sisal.
  • Imports: Industrial machinery, iron and steel, and petroleum.
